Howdy folks,
(I imagine some of you are also subscribers to A24’s mailing list, right? This is kinda like when they post an open letter from the director of one of their movies on the day of its release but it’s just for a YouTube video.)
If you follow me on twitter you’re probably sick and tired of me posting about working on a super big muppet video essay. Well, good news! The video is out today so you never have to listen to me tease it again! Now I’m just going to be straight up plugging it!!
So yeah, I’m just basically just nakedly begging you all to watch it. I’ve put an insane amount of work into it (like in the hundreds of hours) and it would really, really bum me out if it flopped.
I’ll try and quickly pitch it to you; Fundamentally the video is about the intersection of art and technology and the ways in which one informs the other. I examine how the dawn of television made the creation of The Muppets not only possible but in some ways, almost inevitable. It’s an unsettling thought, that the technology and media available to us directly influences the artistry we create and enjoy, but I believe it’s one worthy of serious examination.
I hope you’ll give the video a watch when you have the time and if you can, subscribing to or interacting with my channel would mean an awful lot, as would sharing the video with anyone you think might enjoy it. There’s probably a million other things I could have done with my time that would have been more “productive” or “lucrative” but I was motivated to make this video out of unbridled passion for a subject I love and the dumb hope that it might eventually find an audience appreciative of the effort.
Thanks as always,
Gavin
P.S. Did I mention it’s my freakin’ birthday today too? NOW YOU GOTTA LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE AND RT!!!!!!!!
P.P.S. The newsletter will be coming at you thick and fast over the next little bit as this day next week I am GOING TO THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL—it’s crazy and a little scary and I’ll be getting into detail on it in another post later this week so keep and eye out for that.
Great video by a great birthday boy.
Loved this. Very informative, insightful, and well explained. I was fortunate enough to meet Muppeteers like Caroll Spinney and Marty Robinson and see them in action on the set of Sesame Street. A marvelous thing to behold!
